Associate Human Rights Officer (Transitional Justice)

About the role

The Associate Human Rights Officer will support the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) by researching, analysing and reporting on human‑rights issues, with a focus on gender dimensions and emerging trends. Working under the supervision of a Human Rights Officer, the incumbent will contribute to advocacy, capacity‑building and data‑driven planning.

Key responsibilities

• Research and collect information on human‑rights violations, emerging trends and capacity gaps, including gender dimensions.
• Analyse data and produce briefing notes, analytical documents and other reports.
• Participate in hearings, consultations and training programmes for law‑enforcement officials, civil‑society representatives and NGOs.
• Maintain up‑to‑date awareness of political and legal developments affecting human‑rights situations.
• Ensure compliance with protection standards and safe handling of information.
• Review human‑rights issues and integrate gender considerations into political, humanitarian and economic programmes.
• Support community mobilisation and advocacy efforts to prevent violations.
• Liaise with government bodies, NGOs, UN agencies and other partners to establish baseline data, especially for vulnerable groups.
• Design and maintain databases to track project progress and visualise data for decision‑making.

Required profile

• Under supervision of a Human Rights Officer and reporting to senior UN officials.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, draft analytical reports and briefings.
• Experience participating in hearings, consultations and capacity‑building trainings.
• Familiarity with gender‑sensitive analysis of human‑rights issues.
• Ability to work collaboratively with government, NGOs, civil‑society and UN partners.
