Senior Protection Associate – Outreach

About the role

The Senior Protection Associate – Outreach will support IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme in Libya, providing protection‑focused assistance to vulnerable migrants throughout their stay, return journey and post‑arrival. Working under the AVM Programme Manager and the Outreach and Community‑Based Protection Officer, the role contributes to safe, dignified migration and the reduction of exploitation.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver protection services to migrants at risk of gender‑based violence, trafficking, unaccompanied children and health vulnerabilities.
• Implement community‑based protection activities to raise awareness, build resilience and promote alternatives to detention.
• Support the VHR programme by coordinating safe and expedited returns for vulnerable groups.
• Provide capacity‑building and advocacy to local authorities on child protection, counter‑trafficking, education access and human‑rights standards.
• Collect and analyse protection data to inform programme planning and reporting.

Required profile

• Proven experience in protection or humanitarian assistance, preferably in migration contexts.
• Knowledge of the Central Mediterranean migration route and protection challenges in Libya.
• Familiarity with gender‑based violence, child protection and trafficking issues.
• Ability to work in challenging field environments and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
• Relevant higher‑education qualification in migration studies, international relations, social sciences or a related field.

Required skills

• Strong analytical and reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of Arabic or French is an asset.
