Assistant Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The Assistant Political Affairs Officer supports senior political staff in monitoring and analysing political developments in Libya. Working from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) office in Tripoli, the incumbent contributes to briefing materials, reports and field visit preparations.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, summarise and analyse information from press, social media and other sources on political events.
• Prepare drafts, briefing notes, correspondence, reports, background papers and talking points for senior officers.
• Monitor political, socio‑economic and other relevant developments in assigned areas.
• Support the organisation of official meetings, events and field visits.
• Provide input to political, humanitarian and economic programmes and initiatives.

Required profile

• At least two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, security, development management or related fields.
• Experience supporting political dialogue or reconciliation processes in Libya and prior work in a UN field operation or similar organisation.
• First‑level university degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline; advanced degree may reduce required experience.
• Fluency in English and Arabic at UN Level II in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
• Demonstrated professionalism, effective communication and teamwork competencies.
